Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger Syndrome)
Children and adults with an autism spectrum disorder have difficulty developing and retaining social relationships with others, including those in their own age group, and adults.
The exact causes of autistic spectrum disorders are still unclear, the actual incidence of these disorders is the subject of ongoing debate. The difficulties often affect language, communication and imaginative skills and, in some instances, can also result in obsessive interests and repetitive behaviours. Whilst these difficulties pervade every aspect of life, it is possible to build on the strengths associated with the disorder: the ability to focus intently on a topic or skill can often result not only in some success but also in lifelong fame as demonstrated by Newton, Einstein and JMW Turner.
